The petrol or diesel that you put into car is nearly 80% carbon. In order for that carbon to become carbon dioxide, simple chemistry shows us that each carbon molecule must bond with two oxygen molecules. This, coupled with the fact that oxygen molecules weigh more than carbon molecules, means that your c02 emissions coming out of your car can weigh more than three times the fuel that you put in.
